Dr Timothy hands

The Warden and Fellows are pleased to announce that Dr Timothy Hands, currently Master of Magdalen College School, Oxford, has been appointed Headmaster of the School on the retirement of Dr Ralph Townsend from September 2016.

The Warden and Fellows approached Dr Hands due to his successful track-record at two leading independent schools. Since 2008, he has taken Magdalen College School from strength to strength, not only driving up academic standards but also stressing the importance of first rate pastoral care. He has extended relationships with the city, including initiating a highly-regarded Arts Festival, and has recently been Chairman of HMC. He publishes on 19th- and 20th-century literature, especially Thomas Hardy, and is a devotee of music and sport.

Dr Hands was educated in the state sector, studying the violin at the Guildhall before reading English at King’s College, London.  He held the position of Stipendiary Lecturer at Oriel College, Oxford from 1984 to 1986 responsible for English Language and Literature undergraduates. In 1986, he began teaching at King’s School, Canterbury, where he subsequently became a Housemaster, and in 1994 moved to become Second Master at Whitgift School. From 1997 to 2007 Dr Hands was Headmaster of The Portsmouth Grammar School.

Dr Hands is married to a solicitor, Jane, who read Classics at Oxford:  they have two sons, one about to become a history teacher and the other about to start at university.
